Danzig 1916 Gewehr 98
What can you tell me about my Danzig 1916 Gewehr 98?
It knows more about me than I know about it! Thanks. (Sorry for the small pics.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, no way to tell from the little pics. Is it matching? Is the finish original? How's the bore? Looks good from here, but I'm a long way away.

Best looking one I've seen, congrats.
I used to want one but the examples I run across are pirot paddles, so I gave it up. My advice, other than to treat the metal with CLP, is to leave it alone, it's darn near perfect at is. |

I'll take some better pics as these were from the seller. Even with 20/20 Vision it was a good test!
Danzig, is that now in Poland since the borders changed after WW1, now known as Gdansk? How many rifles did Danzig make from 1914-1918? Any other info or Gew.98 websites? |

Danzig became a "free city" after WW1, to provide Poland with access to the Baltic, then became Gdansk after WW2 when Poland was given 40,000 sq/mi of German territory, and millions of Germans were killed or forcibly removed.

Danzig as a german government arsenal was a prolific manufacturer of the gew98 , and to a much lesser and periodic extent the kar98a.
Danzig had banner years of production 1915 through 1917.For government arsenals 1916 was about the best year of actual numbers produced.Danzig was also part of the wartime program of refurbishing damaged and battlefield rifles. I had a 1904 Amberg that had been rebuilt and marked in one line on the receiver 'DANZIG 1915' ( mark W got it from me some years ago ). It was a decent rifle with it's only real flaw being some jackarse renumbered the bolt. I am searching for a 1914 and a 1918 dated danzig gew98 myself. I had a total mismatch shooter 1914 Danzig I traded to a KCN member in Alaska a decade ago , have not seen another since. If your rod is mismatch I have a # 95 rod in my box of spares. Check 'Graf's profile for a link to his gew98 website. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GewehrCollectorsgroup/ Here's a link to a collecotr group you might want to join in on as well. |
