Not too long ago I got a three hundred round battle pack of AP/tracer ammo. It is DWM mfg, dated 1937. Have any of you shot any of this configuration ammo? The pack has been opened(not me), and looks pristine. I read that the tracer compound is no longer viable. But the AP part would be ok. I was wondering if I should try it out, since it's already been opened. As far as I know, it's the largest factory loaded ap caliber, the .50 being next, available to regular shooters. Thanks!
Looks like it would be a good shooter. Not operationally damaged. Nice undinked handguard. G43 ddx scope blue, WaA359 base with two sets of numbers left and right. I don't want it. Excess to me. But I would like to squeeze the last nickle out of it. What do you guys think? Repo stock? Repo butplate, DC and Barrel band? Part it out? GB? Ebay scope and mount. (checked there and there hasen't been one there for over 90 days.) Kinda to good for blank adapting/reenacting bore wise and action condition wise. Doug

After refurbing some older rifles (started with a 1943 Mossberg M44 US sniper training rifle and then did a Mosin Nagant M91) I bought my first Mauser K98. Being new to these rifles I have several questions.

The reciever is marker "243" and "1939". Serial number is 9664. The S/N is marked in several places along with Waffenampt 26s...on the reciever, the sights, trigger gaurd and the floor plate. The bolt does not match and has a serial number "7845e" with Waffenampt 77's. The fellow who sold me the gun said it was a veteran bringback, but I can see an import mark on the underside of the barrel..."K98 German 8mm, St. Albans VT". Someone attempted to sand this out, which is a shame. The gun was covered with what I assume was Russian shellac...the wood was all dark reddish brown and the shellac was on or in alot of the metal parts as well. From what I have read the 243 indicates it was produced at the Borsigwalde arsenal in Berlin.

First question is on the stock...is this a laminated stock...it certainly appears to be to me (see pictures)? The seller told me it was solid walnut. He had a Yugo post war Mauser (1948) that was quite a bit lighter and he said it was the walnut that made this one heavier. If it is a laminated stock, would this have been 1939 period? Both the hand grip and the stock have the serial number "9664" stamped inside. The stock has a very faint large Waffenamt on butt (same side as the bolt). Not easy to see in the picture but it is there. It was not visible until the Russian shellac was stripped off. There is also a large ink stamping under the butt plate that appears to read "5.18.39 K1"...could this be a date?

Next question is on the elevation sight...it has scales on both sides? Researching it a bit, I found an article in an old magazine (The American Rifleman April 1955) that explains that this was World War I vintage and that one scale was for a lower grain ammunition. Is this common and if so might it indicate that this gun was WWI vintage and refurbed for WWII? If it is a refurb why would the reciever be plainly marked "1939"...it does not appear that any old numbers / dates were crossed off or replaced?

Another question I have, has to do with the front sight. It does not have obvious groves or slots along the bottom where it is attached to the barrel and thus does not appear that it could capture a hood...were there models on which one cannot put a hood on the front blade sight?

And finally..there are some markings on the reciever underside That I do not understand...what do "240 39 Dö" and "bY" indicate?

After gentle clean-up my plan is to reblue the metal, taking care not to lose any of the original markings, focusing on repairing areas buffed or sanded by previous owner(s). I will darken the stock by applying boiled linseed oil...several coats to give it a shine but not so much to take away from it's weathered appearance.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. If guns could only talk!

A loaded cannon I am,

A loaded cannon I am,

As you may or may not have read already we have had a rifle up and shooting and shot it long enough to find out a number of things..... Most all good, and the one exception wasn't really bad. It was actually anticipated from the start and only relates to a choice of material/heat treat used in one of the parts that has shown to be less than what we wanted in the longevity department. We now have that part in line to be remade and heat treated so we can start firing again - the fun part!

As we wait twiddling our thumbs we are still programming, making fixtures, making parts, scratching our heads etc so that when the green light comes on from the ATF we will be very close to rifles to sell. Which brings the new idea...

We have about 40+ receiver blanks we are presently working on and about 20-30 of each of the other parts we have made/are making for the first run of guns. I am hoping to get 20 out of this first run to offer for sale. My original intent was to offer the first run at auction to try to recoup some of the money/hype the guns initial offering/whatever and still intend to do that - with 10 of them. This is the idea on the other 10. I initially came to this forum and lurked for a while before deciding to say anything here first and not somewhere else - and haven't regretted it. You guys tolerate this all very well and my thought was to offer this here first.

There will be 10 rifles out of the first run we will try to auction off - I don't anticipate a problem selling them - time will tell. Right after that is done I think it might be appropriate to sell the other 10 at a fixed price to some of the people from this forum that have been tolerant/helpful from the git go. That fixed price will still be under 5k. How much I don't know but for safeties sake put 4995.00 in your head. If the ones at auction go higher then we may do some of each run at auction for those folks who don't want to wait and others to people on a list. I don't know crap about marketing but I will learn.

Anyway the idea is this- Right now the rifle is a proven shooter and we will eventually get it approved. Five different people shot it the day I continued to shoot it until the one part failed and I had to stop. And yes I am a rocket scientist who told my son it was getting too late in the day for the vid and we would do it tomorrow - oops.....
IF you think you want one - provided it looks great, shoots good, etc etc etc - and might want one of the first 10 I would, at this time just like to know. Meaning..... If you want one seriously and think you would actually be a buyer then just a name and maybe email for a list. NO MONEY I am going to take 20 names and start with the first and go through them until 10 rifles are sold and then be amazed because I think good intentions usually captures 80% of any such list - and thats cool - this is something probably 3-4 months down the road anyway and things change for people.

If 10 aren't spoken for from this forum within the next 30 days or so I will probably post this same offering on the website. We are just eyeballs deep in this, and now that we see it works and is gonna be cool as hell we just want to make it more "real" for you and us.

So what do you get for your name? You get a pecking order and once ATF approval is made we will give you a serial number. You can post your "name" in response to this post in the open and know exactly where you are on that list - we will tell you and it is a public deal if you like. I will also try to cater a little more as to finish or whatever as we are able to do - and the cool thing is there is no money and you can always back out!

Many who have talked to me via this forum may be out of town and I am really trying to give them a chance at this since they already expressed an interest early on and I would like to see them get one if they want one. So, 5 names from anyone and for 2 weeks I will hold 5 that will not go to anyone that hasn't already contacted me about one or getting on a list or something from here already - fair enough?

PLEASE ask questions and make comments!

Rick

I took the front sight block off and saw that the slot in the barrel for the front sight base pin was not dead on top of the barrel but was slightly off to the right.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there anything I can do to get the front sight base straight??

Testing the waters here, I am moving toward more modern things as of late and I am thinking about trying to move my shooter grade K43. Its an ac44 that I rebuilt from a blm gun that went boom. The bolt group all matches but thats it. It has a shooters kit installed and runs the yugo sniper stuff flawlessly. Its not all that pretty, the stock has been sanded heavily and repaired. The parked finish is worn, but its a solid shooter that makes tiny little groups at 50. I am thinking low end price or maybe even a trade? I figured I would try here first as you guys were so helpfull in geting it put back together.

I own a k98 which is very interesting. It is a duv 41 with all matching numbers. According to the website there were only 179291 made that year. The hand guard is original to the gun. It is laminated wood with reddish tinting caused by the red glue in the laminating process. The stock however is a somewhat rare and interesting. It is a solid wood stock believe to be almond. It has WaA655 with eagles all over it, in the correct places. There is an L on the stock which makes it part of the Luftwaffe, which makes them somewhat harder to find than the Nazi Army stocks which have an H on them. An expert believes the stock to be a byf 41. I don't know how many k98's were in the Luftwaffe but I heard there were about 40,000 Germans in the Luftwaffe, which makes them somewhat harder to find than the ones with the H on them.
My question is should I try to find a stock to match the duv 41. And try to sell the L stock. Or should I just keep what I have? Help.

Are you curious about how to get your federal firearms license (FFL)? Acquiring your federal firearms license isn't as hard as you think. While the paperwork may seem intimidating, the results are well worth the effort. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to display your antique gun collection at shows and conventions? Here are some tips to consider when filling out your application:

Make Sure You're Eligible:- There are several things you need to consider before you even fill out your application. In order to qualify, you must be twenty-one or older. You must also have a criminal record that allows you to use and sell guns and ammunition.

Make Sure You Fill it Out Correctly:- When it comes to filling out your application, you need to make absolutely sure that the information you provide is both accurate and current. Do not lie on the Federal Firearms License application. Failure to provide accurate information will result in your application being rejected.

Include the Required Additional Materials With Your Application:-Along with providing an accurate federal firearms license application, you will need to include a photograph of yourself, plus a set of fingerprints. Don't try to do this yourself from home. This is not a legitimate way to provide these items. Instead, you can have this done at your local police station.

Include Your Mandatory Fee :-Your federal firearms license application comes with a required fee. However, depending on what kind of business you're applying for, your fee may vary.

Keep Your Business Information Archived:- Once your federal firearms license application is accepted, it will remain valid for three years. During that time, you are expected to keep a logbook of your business transactions. Depending on the types of guns you sell and the amount of money you make, you may need to pay additional taxes. Additionally, you will need to pay a fee to renew your license as well.

Thanks....bang

What would you guys do with this very early demilled receiver??

Guys I'm looking for some advice. I have a very early demilled MP43 receiver, number 5953c/43. Yes, a "regular" MP43 (not MP43/1) made in late 1943. It is in the same letter block as known MP43/1 examples including Chuck the GK43 forum moderator's example.

As you can see in the pic it's also an early type demil and would be a relatively easy build for me compared to others I've done.

The difficulty comes into play here - I'm not sure I should do anything to modify this receiver because of it's rarity. MP43's made in '43 are probably exceedingly rare and every time I plan on doing something with it I stop. The pieces I've collected to build this are even more crazy rare - MP43/1 barrel, MP43/1 front sight base, MP43/1 muzzle nut, MP43/1 blank adapter, MP43/1 trigger housing. I have a large early style buttstock and bolt with no extractor relief cut. My original plan was to build a MP43/1 semi for reenacting and was going to use this receiver because I couldn't find a demilled MP43/1 marked receiver for sale.

What do you guys think? I know there are some people who will say that it's demilled so who cares. However my thinking is that at least I have this - if someone tried to find a registered MP43 with a 43 date code I doubt one could be found easily, maybe at all. Should I use it for the 43/1 project, should I do a "early MP43" semi build, or should I just leave it on the shelf with my other stuff?

Thanks for any advice,

I have the opportunity to purchase one of two G43's

Rifle #1:

AC45 with chip missing at the rear of the stock near the buttplate about a square inch in size

and about a 1/4" deep. Honest wear and all matching. Otherwise, umolested stock. Barrel is

minty. Handguard is a bit loose, but not too bad. Forging is a bit crude. Mag is nice and

correct.

Rifle #2:

DUV44. Durofol upper handguard a bit darker than the wood of the stock fits snug. All correct

parts and matching. Honest wear on the wood, but no other damage. Barrel is probably not as

nice as the AC45 above, but is still very decent. Forging is a bit crude but slightly nicer than

above. Stock is correct & numbered, but laquored. Mag is nice and correct.

I don't plan on shooting the gun. Which is the better buy? They are both being offered at the

same price with repro scope mounts and Zf4 scopes. Scopes are in exelent shape. No mold or fog

and clear as day.

What should I do...can only afford one.

The form asks for hours of operation so it appears that ATF wants me to have a business to sell guns set up and "runable" before I have my license to sell guns. Makes perfect sense to me as this is the govt we're talking about. You would think step 1 would be "get license".....?

Guys I want to start uploading some MP44/PTR44 gunsmithing videos. However my Youtube account doesn't have enough subcribers and hits to get anything out of it. I'm not going to ask any of you to contribute anything for me doing this, but if I could make a couple bucks via ads, etc over the long haul that would be neat. And the more money I made, the more videos I'd make too if this crazy idea actually worked.

Please check out this link to my MP44 semi auto video and subscribe to my account. I think you have to double click on it to open it in Youtube and then subscribe that way. We'll see how many subscribers and hits I can get over the next couple months. I doubt we can get my account up to the insane levels created by all the 10 year olds out there, but let's try.

Also if you want to reply and give me your requests, etc for future vids I'll keep track of that. Videos I have planned are:

General operation instructions.
Routine maintenance/cleaning.
Small parts replacement (ejector, extractor, etc).
Blank adapting.
Barrel removal/installation.
Trigger housing parts replacement (trigger, sear, disconnector, hammer, full auto and safety sears, selector, safety)
Semi auto build from parts kit (would rather wait for an approved design but we can discuss)
Ammunition reloading
Case forming
Bullet casting
Blank making
MP/PTR accessories

-feedback-

Thanks,

My best friend has a MP 44 that was handed down to him. He said he thought his g-father carried it in the war. The only flaw from what I recall seeing was that the barrel appeared to be spot welded on the inside where the shell feeds in. Its welded just enough to keep a cartridge from going in. We were wondering if something like this is reversible or what kind of value the gun has. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Johnny
